MDS System

Definition of MDS
MDS is a medication storage device designed to simplify the administration of solid oral dose medication. MDS can potentially address the issues of difficulty accessing medication and following the regimen due to sight impairment and/or confusion /forgetfulness. However, the evidence to support these benefits is limited. There is no evidence based research to suggest that MDS improve patient concordance.

Suitable for patients with the following characteristics

• struggling to organise medications and find it difficult to remember to take them at the correct time each day
• with a large number of medications to take each day
• finding difficult to remove medication from the original packaging
• having a carer who helps the patient to ensure he/she takes the medicines correctly

Preparation of the MDS Systems
MDS systems are prepared by community pharmacists and they will provide them to the patient on a weekly basis.

Cost of the service
The pharmacist will establish the price of the service. Request more information at your local pharmacy.
